Sample Definition of Terms for Chapter 1-Thesis Writing

Definition of Terms 

Apprenticeship. As used in the study it refers to the manner by which students engage themselves to toil in actual work situation in return for instruction in journalism craft. 

Campus Paper Adviser. As used in the study is a duly appointed faculty member who has advance knowledge, specialization and interest in teaching and managing journalistic activities.

Communication. As used in the study is an exchange and flow of information and ideas from one person to another; it involves a sender transmitting an idea, information, or feeling to a receiver.

Editorial Board. As used in this study, it refers to the set of a duly appointed faculty adviser, the editor who qualified and a representative of the Parents-Teachers' Association, who will determine the editorial policies to be implemented by the editor and staff members of the student publication concerned.

English proficiency. As used in this study, it is the ability to demonstrate competence in English grammar based on the scores on the students got in the test.

Enhancing. As used in the study it refers to improve the quality or condition of.
Internet. As used in this study, it refers to a worldwide, publicly accessible series of interconnected computer networks that transmit data by packet switching using the standard Internet Protocol (IP). It is a network of network´ that consist of millions of smaller domestic, academic, business, and government networks´ which together carry various information and services.

Journalism. As used in the study it refers to the program preparing students in reporting, writing, and editing for periodicals and newspapers, photographing, or broadcasting news.

News Anchor. As used in the study it refers to the person who presents a news show on television, radio or the internet.

Proficiency. As used in the study it refers to the advancement in knowledge of the English language and the quality of being proficient.

Reading. As used in this study refers to getting meaning from the printed page. This includes skills for vocabulary development, levels of comprehension, literary appreciation and study skills.

Speaking. As used in this study includes skills in using language expressions and grammatical structures correctly in oral communication.

Student Journalist. As used in this study, it refers to any bona fide student enrolled for the current semester or term, who has passed or met the qualification and standards of the editorial board.

Student Publication. As used in this study, it refers to the newspaper of magazine being published by the student body through an editorial board and publication staff composed of students selected but fair and competitive examinations.

Time spent. As used in this study, it refers to the length of hours students’ used journalism activities.
